Daniel et Florence Guerlain

Ciprian Muresan

Born in 1977 in Dej, Romania, Ciprian Muresan graduated in 2003 from the Academy of Fine Arts, Cluj-Napoca, where he still lives and works. He has exhibited at the Secession Building (Vienna), the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (Berlin), the Mnam-Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam), the New  Museum (New York) and at the 53rd Venice Biennale. His works are in the Taylor Collection, the Prints and Drawing Dept. at the Mnam-Centre Pompidou and the Daniel and Florence Guerlain Collection. He is represented by the Galeria Plan B (Cluj, Berlin), David Nolan (New York) and Éric Hussenot (Paris).

Central to Ciprian Muresan’s work are the themes of the transmission and reception. Born in Romania, he lived through the 1989 Revolution and, as a result, conceived a subtle relationship with time, which he regards as being in perpetual movement. Muresan’s body of work is not related to history in a classical sense, but instead raises questions about “how to deal with legacies and artefacts from the past”. Hence his research, the starting point of which is often works by artists whom he admires or exhibition catalogues or museum collections. He delves into them layer by layer, searching for what he calls “art’s substrata”, which he reproduces in drawings that are sometimes very dense and crammed with details. He does not consult catalogues in order to find artist’s biographies or critical reviews, but to absorb the forms that combine with his other concerns about reproduction and originality. Thus Muresan once became fascinated with an installation by Martin Kippenberger and subsequently launched into a series of one hundred and twenty charcoal drawings based on an existent storyboard. He has since described this process as “a quasi-religious or ritual gesture in which the act of copying incorporated the notion of extended time”.Occasionally added to this spiritual quest is the facetiousness of refusing to show certain works, for example the drawings executed in white ink on white paper, or thirty thousand copies of a work presented on a column that obliged the spectator to jump in the air in order to see what it depicted. Muresan has also paid tribute to Yves Klein’s Leap into the Void and made other more or less direct references to Piet Mondrian, Kasimir Malevich and Joseph Beuys, as well as Masaccio and Hans Holbein. Though he experiments with multiple media, such as sculpture or video, he admits that he “has drawing in his blood”, having practised it so much at school from life and live models. Yet for this artist everything is constantly in motion and nourishes or regenerates itself. Every story leads to another one. “In the 1980s and ’90s,” Muresan continues, “there was a great deal of destruction in my homeland, especially in the city of Bucharest. In a symbolic manner, my work is another sort of transformation.” A phase which is the prelude to the act of reconstruction…
